HTLab: Zines as a Tool for Action (October 15 ONLINE)

How can zines be used in the classroom to hold space for creating and spreading ideas? How can we infuse zine-making into our teaching practices, animating authentic student narratives on equity, inclusion, justice, and community engagement?  How can faculty be motivated to introduce zines in their classrooms?

In this virtual HTLab, Artist and Design Activist, Jen White-Johnson, an Adjunct Professor of Visual Culture and Design at Bowie State University, will lead us in a zine-making workshop using both digital and non-digital tools. Participants will explore how self-published zines can be used as a form of political protest in and outside the classroom. Engaging with Jen’s Zine Collection, participants will also discover how zines can give voice to students from marginalized groups and perspectives and will hear about the value of zines in the democratic process. 

In addition to understanding the social, political, and pedagogical applications of zines and zine-making, participants will learn to:

• Fold and cut an 8.5 x 11 single sheet into an 8-page mini zine booklet 
• Use your own artwork or artwork from Jen’s Zine Tool Kit for the visual content of your zine. 
• Opt to use Adobe Spark (a free digital design layout tool) to add text and artwork to your 8-panel layout 
• Apply these tools to group projects with students in either online or F2F classrooms
