Description

The Dresher Center for the Humanities is proud to sponsor the New Student Book Experience Lecture

Kindred by Octavia Butler

All new students attending UMBC in fall 2018 are asked to read the book Kindred. As part of Welcome Week, the book discussions will be held on Monday, August 27th from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. Discussion groups will be limited to 20-25 students and will meet in various on campus locations.

We will spend time in conversation focusing on themes and questions that will enhance discussion within your group. Thank you, in advance, for supporting this initiative. This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with our new students and help them learn about our expectations and commitment to excellence in education.

Dr. Kendra Parker will be on campus on Monday, October 8th. Her lecture will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall with a Q&A and reception to follow. Dr. Parker’s lecture is entitled “Kindred at (Nearly) 40: A Challenge for Our Changing Same.” She will discuss the importance of the neo-slave narrative genre as one point of entry in understanding how the legacy Butler leaves with Kindred should inspire us to think about and participate in allyship, civil disobedience, and resistance.
