Description

The UMBC Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Program Presents a Virtual Session on

Advocacy for Civil Rights Amidst Language Repression and Anti-Immigrant Backlash: The Fight Continues

Prof. Kate Menken, Queens College of the City University of New York (CUNY)

In light of the increasing challenges faced by immigrant students and families, and restrictive changes to immigration and language policies under the new administration, this talk will be a call to action rather than a traditional academic presentation. After briefly contextualizing the current moment within the history of US language education policy, I will share some of the advocacy work currently happening in New York and across the US. Then we will together have a conversation so we can share ideas and plan next steps, and complete an advocacy do-now action before the end of our time together.

Free Registration
The event is open to anyone interested in this topic.  Registration is free by completing this form on or before 12:00 noon on 4 November 2025.

Format
This talk is virtual.  The meeting link will be sent to registered participants in the afternoon of 4 November.
