Empowering Education Participants through Language Assessment Literacy Enhancement

Jiyoon Lee, Associate Professor, Education
Fall 2025 Dresher Center Residential Faculty Fellow

This talk presents the guiding vision of Jiyoon Lee’s forthcoming book, A Path to Empowerment: What, Why, and How of Language Assessment Literacy. As an educational linguist, Lee has examined language assessment literacy (LAL), defined as how education participants understand and practice language assessment, primarily through social science perspectives. In this new book, she argues that the conceptual framework of LAL should be broadened to incorporate not only technical knowledge, such as assessment principles and skills, but also the education participants’ holistic assessment experience, including their emotions and motivations. Lee also suggests that enhanced LAL can help empower education participants by increasing their awareness of their assessment experience and fostering deeper reflection on how assessment shapes their learning, identities, and opportunities. In this talk, she will discuss established social science perspectives on LAL, as well as her new approach informed by the humanities.
