Description

Reaching Behind the Bars: Looking Past Incarceration
Honors 300 Symposium

This student-led symposium will delve into the complex issue of incarceration in the United States, exploring its impact on individuals, families, and communities. We'll hear from students currently enrolled in Honors 300: Community Engaged Writing: Inside and Outside the Walls.

Panel Discussions Include:

  • Education & Rehabilitation: Explore educational programs offered inside prisons, including "Inside-Out" programs where incarcerated individuals and students from outside institutions learn together. Examine the power of education as a tool for self-expression and healing for incarcerated individuals. Debate the effectiveness of these initiatives in promoting rehabilitation and reintegration.
  • Maryland Food & Prison Abolition Project & Workers' Rights: Learn about the Maryland Food & Prison Abolition Project's mission to end mass incarceration and fight for fair labor practices within prisons. Explore the connection between food systems, prison labor, and worker exploitation. Discuss how prison labor conditions impact incarcerated individuals and their potential for reintegration upon release.
  • Female Incarceration, Incarcerated Mothers, & Gender in the Justice System: Analyze the disproportionate impact of incarceration on women and mothers. Discuss the challenges faced by incarcerated mothers and their children. Explore initiatives that promote family reunification and support systems for women re-entering society.

Followed by Q&A session with all panelists.

Light refreshments will be served.

This symposium is open to all students, faculty, and the broader community. We encourage attendees to come with an open mind and a willingness to engage in thoughtful discussion.
