Description

For their Spring 2022 Humanities Forum, the Dresher Center for the Humanities presents

Graphic Medicine: Comics in the Age of COVID

Hillary Chute, Distinguished Professor, Departments of English and Art + Design, Northeastern University

In this talk, Hillary Chute explores the growing phenomenon of comics that address, broadly speaking, issues in and around healthcare. These works, created by doctors and medical staff, as well as patients, family members, and caregivers, convey qualities of experience, both bodily and psychic, that words alone can’t capture and demystify medical discourses and spaces. Chute looks at the origins of the Graphic Medicine movement, and provides context for the phenomenon of comics about COVID-19. She contends that comics can be an effective form for patients, doctors, and anyone else affected by the pandemic, to express fears and desires, humor, and mourning.

Co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Department of Visual Arts.
